Scholarships/Competitions

The School of Music offers over $150,000 a year in student scholarships. All students are considered for scholarships when they audition for entrance to the School of Music. Descriptions of some of our scholarships are given below.

NOTE: All scholarships must be renewed each year. To reapply, complete the Scholarship Renewal Form.

Band Scholarships

Stipends are given to wind, brass and percussion students for participation in marching band, pep band, and one of the concert bands (Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, or Concert Band). For more information, contact the Band Office.

Grace Moore Vocal Scholarships (PDF application | DOC Application)

To be eligible for a Grace Moore Vocal Scholarship, you must be a resident of or born in the State of Tennessee and have graduated from high school between June 2005 and June 2009. Deadline for application: at least one week before the audition date you select.

National Piano Scholarships

The University of Tennessee National Piano Scholarship Competition is open to all piano students who are planning to enter college as a piano major in performance or piano pedagogy. All awards are made to incoming UT students only. Awards include scholarships toward tuition for four years of study. Auditions for the National Piano Scholarship will be held in conjunction with the School of Music scholarship auditions.

Repertoire Requirements

  • Baroque composition
  • First movement of a Classical sonata
  • 19th century composition
  • 20th century composition

Kline Scholarship

The Kline Music Scholarship awards two undergraduate students enrolled in the B.M. in Performance degree programs $8-10,000 each per academic year.  One award is given to a student majoring in piano performance; the other scholarship award is given to  a performance major in voice, organ, or any orchestral instrument. Applicants must be above average academically, demonstrate exceptional  musical talent and be of good character. Financial need may be considered. The scholarship can be renewed. School of Music Ambassador Scholarship (information | application | reference)

The School of Music Student Ambassadors are a small group of students majoring in different areas. These students help the School of Music by:

  • Meeting with prospective students, taking them on tours of the School of Music and talking to them about our programs.
  • Representing the School of Music at various recruitment fairs and activities on campus.
  • Assisting with auditions and the annual School of Music Open House.

Ambassadors are expected to be responsible, honest, respectful, communicative, and to represent the School of Music to the best of their abilities. Ambassadors are given a $300 scholarship (payable at the end of the academic year) for a minimum of 40 volunteer hours and $400 scholarship for those who earn more than required 40 hours of service in a year.

The Ambassador Application DEADLINE is April 11, 4:00 pm.

Celebration of Excellence Competition (information | application)

The annual School of Music Celebration of Excellence Competition is open to all undergraduate instrumentalists, vocalists, and small ensembles (up to six members). Repertoire may consist of any composition not to exceed seven minutes in duration including one selection or two short selections.

Past winners of this competition are ineligible to compete again. However, if a student won a previous COE competition as a soloist, he/she MAY compete again as a member of a chamber ensemble and vice-versa.

Cash prizes in the amount of $100.00 will be awarded to the top winners in this year's competition.
Performance: The winners of the competition will perform on the final Honors Convocation Group Solo Class

Music Study Club Scholarships (information & application)

Rising juniors and seniors majoring in music or music education at the University of Tennessee are eligible to compete for this $1500 award.

Concerto Competition

UT School of Music full-time students currently enrolled in applied lessons are eligible for this juried competition for a solo instrumentalist or vocalist to perform with the University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra.
