Music Theory

For students interested in writing their own music or analyzing the music of others, the University of Tennessee School of Music offers both graduate and undergraduate degrees in music theory and composition.

The Bachelor of Music degree with a concentration in Theory and Composition is a combined program, providing students with experience in both the writing and analysis of music. Students take specialized courses in sound synthesis, sound recording techniques, computer music transcription, counterpoint, and orchestration. In addition, students have weekly composition lessons with an active composer. Students may choose to specialize in electronic or acoustic composition, or in music theory.

At the graduate level, separate Master’s degree programs are offered in composition, music theory, and music theory with a technology emphasis. All students take classes in Analytical Techniques and Music Theory Pedagogy. Composition students study composition privately with the goal of writing a major work for their thesis. Theory students take advanced music theory and history classes in their area of interest in preparation for writing a thesis on an analytical or pedagogical topic. Students in the Music Theory with Technology Emphasis program take courses in Technology in Music Research, Computer Projects, and Ethnomusicology: Music and Technology, and have the option of writing a thesis or developing a portfolio of instructional programs. 21 Music Theory & Composition Graduates with a major in Music Theory and Composition usually continue their studies through the doctoral level and seek jobs teaching theory or composition at the university level. Some graduates choose to seek careers composing or arranging music for films or TV.
