Welcome to the University of Tennessee Orchestra Program

The University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra is the most prominent collegiate orchestral ensemble in the state. The 70-piece Symphony Orchestra performs several symphonic concerts annually, dedicated to the larger orchestral literature from the 18th century through the present: symphonies, overtures, choral-orchestral, large-scale string works, and concertos featuring the outstanding faculty of the School of Music and renown guest artists. The Symphony Orchestra also holds Composer Reading Sessions, which are dedicated to reading and recording new orchestral compositions by student composers. Every year a special "Concertos and Classics" concert is presented, which features the student winners of the annual Concerto Competition, sponsored by the School of Music.

The UT Chamber Orchestra, founded in 2004, is dedicated to smaller, more intimate works in the orchestral literature, performing a wide range of repertoire from the 16th century through the present.

The UT Opera Orchestra performs in conjunction with the UT Opera Theater program and often collaborates with the Knoxville Opera Company in joint productions. Performers gain opportunities to play in some of Knoxville's finest performing theaters, collaborate with both student and professional singers, and be lead by outstanding faculty and operatic artists.

The Studio Orchestra provides a wide variety of playing exposure. This ensemble reads a diversity of literature, including calssical, jazz, popular and other forms of music, and frequently holds recording sessions with state-of-the-art-equipment and experienced studio recording faculty.

The UT Contemporary Music Ensemble, founded in spring 2006, performs repertoire composed after 1950, with emphasis on living composers and new student compositions.
