University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra

A Few Words about Music...
September 27, 2009 at 4:00pm

The University of Tennessee Orchestra Program begins the year with a celebration of the spoken and unspoken word. Samuel Barber's Essay for Orchestra is included in the concert, which begins with Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides Overture incelebration of the composer’s 200th anniversary of his birth. Two narrated favorites complete the program: Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, and Benjamin Britten's The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra.

Music of Great Britain

Two pieces from Sir Malcolm Arnold begin the program: his popular Four Scottish Dances, followed by the Concerto for Two Violins and String Orchestra, featuring School of Music faculty violinists Mark Zelmanovich and Miroslav Hristov. Edward Elgar's glorious Enigma Variations concludes the program.

Orchestral Romance
February 14, 2010 at 8:00pm

This Valentine's day concert offering includes two powerful works from the Romantic era: Giuseppe Verdi's Overture to La Forza del Destino, and Piotr Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 2. Also featured on the program is Wolfgang Mozart's famous Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra, featuring School of Music faculty clarinetist Gary Sperl, performing on a rare Buffet Extended-Range Basset-Clarinet.

Our yearly concert of concertos and arias from the winners of the annual UT Concerto Competition, along with a timeless classical masterwork: Beethoven's Overture to Egmont.

The Orchestra Program join forces with the UT Opera Theater program to present Robert Ward's Pulitzer Prize-winning opera, THE CRUCIBLE. Dr. Kevin Class conducts.

Rossini Festival
April 23-26, 2010

A double-bill of one-act operas: Stephen Paulus' THE VILLAGE SINGER and Giocomo Puccini's GIANNI SCHICCHI are the UT Opera Theater and Orchestra Program’s offering during the Knoxville Opera Company’s annual Rossini Festival.


University of Tennessee Chamber Orchestra

The Messiah

The orchestra joins forces with the UT Chamber Singers and the Farragut Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir in a performance of Georg Frideric Handel's beloved oratorio, The Messiah, part I. Durufle: Requiem

Dr. Angela Batey conducts the UT Chamber Singers, UT Concert Choir and the UT Chamber Orchestra in a performance of Maurice Durufle's Requiem.
