Strings
The University of Tennessee offers both a Bachelor and Master of Music degree in string performance for violin, viola, cello and string bass students wishing to pursue careers as teachers, solo artists, or members of professional symphony orchestras.
Students in the Bachelor’s program participate in symphony orchestra each semester and take courses in conducting, string literature, and pedagogy in addition to the core music courses. String students also participate in chamber ensembles including string trios and quartets. Performance majors are required to present two solo recitals before graduation.
The Master of Music program in string performance is designed to prepare accomplished string players for doctoral work or for careers as teachers or performers. Students in the graduate
program participate in symphony orchestra, many as principal chair players, and take courses in musicology, theory, and conducting. A graduate recital demonstrating the ability to perform
major works from the standard repertoire is required of all students.
