‘Avant Pop’ Dutch Composer Jacob ter Veldhuis
IN RESIDENCE
UT School of Music
MARCH 30-APRIL 4, 2009

It is with roaring enthusiasm that UT’s School of Music and the Ready for the World program announce the Residency and Festival of Dutch composer Jacob ter Veldhuis.  Traveling from The Netherlands to spend the week with UT students, faculty and patrons, JacobTV brings to us his bold and unforgettable approach to music composition.  In addition to seminars, discussions, and masterclasses, two major concerts are scheduled that feature his music, including the April 2nd world premiere of a new arrangement of his “Tallahatchie Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble.”  The concert on Friday, April 3 features leading American ambassadors of JacobTV’s ‘boombox’ music, along with the saxophone studio of Connie Frigo.

As one of the most popular and intriguing international composers today, JacobTV is preoccupied with American media and world events. For the past eight years, he has captivated American musicians and audiences with his own creation of music called “boombox” music.  In this “boombox” music, he makes superb use of electronics and live instruments, incorporating sound bytes from American speech, manipulating them into a melodic and rhythmic groove, and then setting live instruments against them.

Another fascination of JTV’s is the American-English language, and, in particular, the hidden emotion in most of our speech.  He believes our language to be the most expressive of all of the languages.   It is no surprise that the subjects of the sound bytes in his “boombox” music almost always represent iconic American culture -– famous jazz musicians, talk show hosts and their guests, narration from late night info-mercials, snippets from political speeches, etc… – ‘urban songs’ with a colorful mix of high and low culture.  His work possesses an explosive strength and raw energy combined with extraordinarily intricate architectural design.

From the beginning of his composing career, Jacob strived to ‘pepper his music with sugar.’  It is for these reasons that his music appeals to such masses.  Classical, contemporary, jazz and rock musicians alike identify with his music, as do audiences of every walk of life.

Please join us for this very special week.  You will not forget it.
