****SYNOPSIS****
Act II
Miss Jessel and Peter Quint haunt and rage, as the Governess’ nightmare continues. In the churchyard Mrs. Grose comments upon the children’s innocence, but the Governess is bothered by Flora and Miles’ irreverent behavior. Mrs. Grose urges the Governess to write their guardian. As Mrs. Grose escorts Flora into church, Miles lingers to confront the Governess. When he mentions “the others,” the Governess realizes what she is up against and decides to leave Bly. The Governess enters the schoolroom to find Miss Jessel at her desk. When she challenges Miss Jessel, the ghost vanishes. The Governess decides to remain at Bly but writes the guardian. The Governess tells Miles that she has written to his guardian. Quint calls out to Miles, encouraging the boy to steal the letter.Miles performs on the piano for the Governess and Mrs. Grose while Flora plays. When Flora slips away, the Governess and Mrs. Grose rush to find her. Miles enjoys his successful ruse.The women find Flora at the lake. Miss Jessel appears, but only the Governess sees her. Shouting abuses at the Governess, Flora is led off by Mrs. Grose who decides to take the disturbed girl away from Bly. Mrs. Grose confesses that Miles stole the Governess’ letter. The Governess, now alone with Miles, questions the boy, but Quint tells Miles not to betray their secrets. Miles becomes hysterical and admits stealing the letter. When the Governess urges the boy to reveal the name of his tormentor, he implicates Quint. His power destroyed, Quint vanishes, as Miles falls dead.
