“Excuse me, doctor, how much for a love potion?”
Gaetano Donizetti's comic masterpiece, L'ELISIR D'AMORE (The Elixir of Love) is this season's fall semester offering by the University of Tennessee Opera Theatre. A staple of the repertoire since its 1832 premiere in Milan, this operatic mainstay holds the stage as much for its comic charm as for its storehouse of catchy and beguiling tunes (including what is arguably the world's most beloved tenor aria, 'Una furtiva lagrima.')
It tells the story of Nemorino, who has fallen hard for Adina, the woman who signs his paycheck, but she’s out of his league and torments him with her apparent indifference. The simple solution? A legendary love potion procured by a quack doctor who just happens to be passing through town. But will it work its magic before Adina walks down the aisle with another guy—tonight?
Sharing the role of Nemorino, are tenors, UTOT master's degree candidate, Erik Lickiss and UTOT veteran, guest artist, Christopher Swanson. The remainder of the cast of UT undergraduate and graduate singers is lead by sopranos Anna Eschbach and Theresa Dunigan sharing the role of Adina, the object of Nemorino's ardent love. Baritone Jesse Stock plays Nemorino's rival, the cocky Sgt. Belcore, and the role of Dr. Dulcamara, the snake oil salesman at the heart of the plot, is performed by baritone, Kevin Doherty.
UT School of Music Visiting Associate Professor of Opera Michael McConnell is the stage director; UTOT Music Director, Kevin Class conducts.
Performances are Friday and Saturday nights, November 12th and 13th at 8 p.m., and on Sunday afternoon, November 14th at 2:30. All performances are held at downtown Knoxville's Bijou Theatre. This Italian-language production of L'ELISIR D'AMORE features a projected English translation above the stage so you can follow every nuance of the plot.
Mark your calendars for UT Opera Theatre’s showings of Albert Herring, by Benjamin Britten, which will be performed April 9-11, 2011.
