Music Education

Marvelene Moore

The University of Tennessee has a long and honored tradition in the field of Music Education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Music Education program focuses on preparing prospective music
educators for teaching instrumental and vocal music in grades K-12. The program is based on the National Standards for Arts Education in Music and the requirements for licensure established by the Tennessee Department of Education. The curricula in instrumental and vocal music education consist of courses in the latest techniques, strategies and methodologies for successful teaching. The music education faculty is diverse in its expertise and is current in the profession, often making local, national and international appearances and publishing in their respective areas.

All undergraduate degree programs in Music Education culminate in a Bachelor’s degree in music and a Tennessee K-12 music teaching license. The music education programs include a full year internship, which in most states may count as one year of teaching, and twenty-four credit hours or graduate work which may be applied to a Master of Music degree in music education. The graduate program in music education is focused on developing master teachers in the field of music education. Concentrations leading to the Master of Music degree are available in the areas of general, instrumental, and choral music education. A degree in music with teacher certification is recommended for admission to the Masters program. It is possible for a student with a Bachelor’s degree in music to earn a Master’s degree in music education while pursuing teacher certification.
