Students enrolled in applied study courses are required to take juries each semester except the semesters when they are giving recitals. Jazz majors are required to play a prepared tune for each jury, which takes place during exam week at the end of the semester. The tune will be chosen by the faculty at jury time from a personal repertoire list brought to the jury by the student.
Freshman (enrolled in 100 level applied study)
Prepared Level 1 Tune (selected by faculty from your repertoire list
including at least 3 level 1 tunes)
Freshmen must learn 3 new level one tunes chosen from the jazz repertoire
list each semester.
Sophomore (enrolled in 200 level applied study)
Prepared Level 2 Tune (selected by faculty from your repertoire list
including at least 5 memorized level 2 tunes)
Sophomores must learn 5 new level two tunes chosen from the jazz
repertoire list each semester.
Junior (enrolled in 300 level applied study)
Fall Jury
Prepared Level 3 Tune (selected by faculty from your repertoire
list including at least 7 memorized level 3 tunes)
Juniors must learn 7 new level three tunes chosen from the jazz repertoire
list each semester.
Spring - Junior Recital
A jazz recital should reflect all aspects of the student's consummate
development, such as improvisation, composing and arranging, ensemble
playing, leadership, programming, instrumental ability, versatility (stylistic
and perhaps instrumental), and the ability to select and organize assisting
players. (Passing grade on Junior recital is prerequisite for study at
the 400 level.)
Senior (enrolled in 400 level applied study)
Fall Jury
Prepared Level 4 Tune (selected from your repertoire list including
at least 9 memorized level 4 tunes)
Seniors must learn 9 new level four tunes chosen from the jazz repertoire
list each semester.
