Graduate Assistantships
Graduate assistantships (GA) and graduate teaching assistantships (GTA) are available in the following areas:
Band/Wind Conducting
Assist in the conducting and administration of the University of Tennessee concert and athletic bands. Assist in the teaching of undergraduate conducting and courses in music education. Perform in Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, or Concert Band.
Choral Conducting
Assist with the conducting and administration of the University of Tennessee choral ensembles.
Collaborative Piano
Up to thirteen hours per week of accompanying. Assignments may be tailored to the particular abilities and interests of the graduate student and may include playing for recitals, lessons, and juries; coaching opera; or serving as a rehearsal pianist.
Instrumental Music Education
Assist the Music Education faculty with instrumental music education courses and other duties as needed.
Piano
Teach applied piano and/or class piano.
String Education
Teach string classes in Knox County Public Schools. Perform in the University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra. Candidate must have licensure to teach music in public schools. Potential per-service employment with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra subject to audition.
Strings
Assist with the University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra.
Theory
Teach ear training, supervise computer labs, and assist professor; may teach Music Fundamentals course in second year.
Voice
A combination of the following: inclusion in the Knoxville Opera Studio (a professional training program offered in conjunction with Knoxville Opera), and/or teaching of private or class voice. Assignments will be made according to candidate’s abilities and interests, and the needs of the program.
Salaries: All salaries include tuition waiver and medical coverage in addition to the stipend.
