Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy

Students who are already in a Masters of Music program may also earn a Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy. This program, established in Fall 2009, provides students with the knowledge and practical experience needed to teach high school or undergraduate music theory courses.

Admission

To be admitted to this program, students must meet the university entrance requirements for a certificate program (see Graduate catalog: Graduate Certificate Programs), interview with the theory faculty and have passed the Graduate Theory Diagnostic test or Music Theory 400: Graduate Theory Review.

Program of Study

The certificate program consists of 15 hours of coursework:

  • Analysis: 3 hours (Choose one)
    • Music Theory 520: Analytical Techniques (3)
    • Music Theory 521: Analytical Techniques of Recent Music (3)

  • Technology: 3 hours (Choose one)
    • Music Tech 540: Computer Music Transcription (3)
    • Music Tech 550: Computer Projects (3)

  • Pedagogy: 4 hours
    • Music Theory 530: Music Theory Pedagogy: Written Skills (3) OR
    • Music Theory 531: Music Theory Pedagogy: Aural Skills (3)
    • Music Theory 590: Music Theory Practicum (1)

  • Theory/Technology Electives: 3 hours
    • Music Theory 551: Special Topics in Music Theory (3)
    • Music Theory 530: Music Theory Pedagogy: Written Skills (3)
    • Music Theory 531: Music Theory Pedagogy: Aural Skills (3)
    • Music Theory 593: Independent Study (3)
    • Music Technology 560: Technology in Music Research (3)
    • Music Technology 593: Independent Study in Music Technology (1-3)

  • Final Project: (2 hours)
    Music Theory 595: Music Theory Projects (2)For the final teaching project candidates will be required to teach a 50-minute theory class on a specific topic, provide a handout and homework assignment, and a quiz or test questions on the topic. Theory faculty will observe the class and question the candidate afterward on how students will be evaluated on their knowledge of the topic.
