Undergraduate Audition Procedures Brass Instruments

Auditions normally last about ten minutes and are heard by a committee of faculty members from your area of interest.  The faculty suggests the following in preparation for your live audition:

Brass Instruments

 

  1. Two solos or etudes of contrasting styles.
  2. All major scales.

Suggested literature:

Horn

The first movement exposition from the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th concerto by W.A. Mozart or the first movement of the first concerto by R. Strauss. Any two etudes by Kopprasch or Maxime-Alphonse or other musical examples that demonstrate technical facility and expressive playing.

Trumpet

Any solos by Barat or Balay, Concert Etude by Goedicke, Sonata by Hindemith, Sonata by Ewazen, Concerto by Arutunian, Concert in Eb by Haydn, Concerto in Eb by Hummel, Sonata by Kennan, Andante et Allegro by Ropartz.  Etudes by Arban, Bousquet, Brandt, Charlier, Getchell or Concone.

Trombone

Morceau Symphonique by Guilmont, Andante and Allegro by Barat, any solo by Arthur Pryor, Concertino by F. David. Etudes by Arban Characteristic Studies, Kopprasch, Rochut or Blazevitch.

Euphonium

Haddad Suite for Euphonium or solos from the Rubank Concert and Contest Collection, Tyrell, Rochut or Voxman Selected Studies.

Tuba

Air and Bouree by Bach/Bell, Haddad Suite for Tuba or solos from the Rubank, Concert and Contest Collection. Etudes by Blazevitch, Tyrell or Kopprasch.
