Daniel Cloutier
 

Daniel Cloutier, Assistant Professor of Trombone, joins the UT faculty in August, 2007.

Born and raised in New England, he started playing trombone at age 13. Within three years he was performing professionally in the Norwalk (CT) Symphony Orchestra, beginning a long and colorful orchestral career. Recent Principal positions have included the New Orleans Symphony, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Cloutier’s present orchestral positions are Principal Trombone of the Grant Park (Chicago) Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Ballet Orchestra, and the Wheeling (WV) Symphony Orchestra. The list of artists that he has performed with includes names such as Doc Severinson, Marvin Hamlish, Bernadette Peters, Maynard Ferguson, Dawn Upshaw, Yo-Yo Ma, Neeme Jaarvi, Edo DeWaart, Wolfgang Sawallish, Simon Rattle, Leonard Slatkin, Erich Kunzel, and Maxim Shostakovich. Also known as a composer and arranger, Cloutier has composed three trombone quartets, one brass quintet, and one work for brass choir. He also has numerous arrangements for trombone quartet, trombone choir, as well as brass quartet and quintet.Cloutier received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Northwestern University and his Master’s Degree from Carnegie Mellon University. He is currently completing the DMA degree at West Virginia University.

Cathy Leach
 

Cathy Leach is Professor of Music. She received the B.M. degree from the University of Michigan, the M.M. degree from the University of New Mexico, and the D.M. from Northwestern University.

She teaches trumpet, directs the UT Trumpet Ensemble and coaches small ensembles. Dr. Leach is principal trumpet with the Knoxville Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, and with the UT Brasswind Quintet. She is also a member of Monarch Brass, an all-star brass ensemble comprised of outstanding female brass players from around the world. Dr. Leach appears on recordings on the Musical Heritage and Opus One labels. Dr. Leach is the recipient of a 2004 School of Music Leadership Award, a 2006 Chancellors Award for Outstanding Teaching, and a 2007 James R. and Nell W. Cunningham Outstanding Teaching Award.  Her former students are performing professionally and teaching in universities and public schools all across the United States.  She currently serves the International Trumpet Guild as a member of the Board of Directors 2007-2011. W. Sande MacMorran is Professor of Music. He received the M.M. degree from the University of Wisconsin.

He is the conductor of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra and the assistant conductor and principal tubist of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. He was a founding member of the United States Army Brass Quintet. Mr. MacMorran is a former member of the United States Army Band in Washington, D.C., and the Ball State University Faculty Brass Quintet. Currently he is a tubist with the UT Brasswind Quintet. Calvin Smith

CALVIN SMITH is  Associate Professor of Music at the University of Tennessee, teaching horn, directing the Horn Ensemble, coaching chamber music and performing in The Brasswind Quintet, the faculty brass quintet. For nearly twenty years he was an active freelance hornist in Los Angeles He is co-principal horn of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, and has been  principal horn of the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra since 1983 and continues there, concurrent with his University of Tennessee duties. He is an active recording musician in Nashville. He is a former member of the Annapolis Brass Quintet (America’s first full time brass ensemble), the Westwood Wind Quintet, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Cascade Festival Orchestra, the Los Angeles Brass and the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra. He has been a recordings reviewer for the HORN CALL, the journal of the International Horn Society, since 1999.
