American Choral Directors Association
If students plan to pursue a career in choral music, whether it be in an educational or church setting, they should become a member of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). The purposes of ACDA include fostering and promoting the finest types of choral music, the organization and development of choral groups of all types, the intelligent understanding of choral music, significant research in the field of choral music, and cooperation with all organizations dedicated to the development of musical culture in America.
American String Teacher Association
The American String Teachers Association is an organization dedicated to the promotion of string education in America. At UT, this organization will allow students to get hands-on experience working with young musicians by getting involved with local string programs and teachers. All string performance and education majors are encouraged to join this important association.
Knoxville Music Teachers Association
MTAUTK (Music Teachers Association at UTK) is the student chapter affiliate of MTNA (Music Teachers National Association), a nonprofit organization of over 25,000 independent and collegiate music teachers committed to furthering the art of music through teaching, performance, composition, and scholarly research. Students aspiring to become independent or collegiate music teachers are encouraged to join and participate in a variety of social and learning opportunities. Dues include a subscription to the American Music Teacher Magazine.

The Music and Culture Society serves students interested in historical and cultural aspects of music. The Society welcomes both undergraduate and graduate students with majors within the School of Music, as well as in allied disciplines.

The School has an active student chapter of MENC. The purpose of the student chapter of this national music organization is to provide leadership in professional growth for future music educators. All music students are invited to join.
Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia
The primary purpose of Phi Mu Alpha, a national music fraternity for men, is to encourage and actively promote the highest standards of creativity, performance, education, and research in music in America. Membership is by invitation.
Pi Kappa Lambda
Pi Kappa Lambda is the national honorary organization for outstanding academic students majoring in music. Membership is by invitation from the organization, upon nomination and academic review of the student by the music faculty.

Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity is a music fraternity for women. Its purposes are to foster interest in music and to promote social contact among persons sharing an interest in music. Sigma Alpha Iota organizes its group life specifically to promote competence and achievement within the field of music. Membership is by invitation.
School of Music Advisory Council (SMAC)
The purpose of the School of Music Student Advisory Council is to provide
a voice for the students involved with the School of Music. It
is a place where concerns are addressed and relations between students
and faculty/staff are enriched. The Student Advisory Council will
seek to promote unity and communication among faculty/staff and the students
of the School of Music. This will be accomplished through direct
communication with the Director of the School of Music at least one time
per semester.
