Concerto Competition
UT School of Music full-time students currently enrolled in applied lessons are eligible for this juried competition. Winners will perform as an instrumental or vocal solist with the University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra on Sunday, March 21, 2010, 4:00pm at the “Concertos and Classics” Concerto Competition Concert.
Timeline
Applications are due Friday, January 15, 2010, 5:00 pm. Return completed form to the School of Music office or Alumni Memorial Building Music office.
- Concerto Competition Preliminaries auditions -- Thursday, January 28, 2010, TBD.
- Concerto Competition Final auditions -- Sunday, January 31, 2010, 3:00pm.
Guidelines
Applications
- Applications must be submitted to the music offices in the Music Building or Alumni Memorial Building on JANUARY 15th, by 5:00pm. Applications submitted after that date WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
- Auditions schedule will be posted on bulletin boards in the School of Music by January 27. It is your responsibility to note the time of your performance.
Accompanists
- All Concerto Competition applicants must be accompanied by a pianist for both the preliminaries and finals.
- Each contestant is required to provide his/her own accompanist for the audition and must pay the accompanist’s fee by January 27.
Entrants
- Only currently enrolled full-time UT students studying with an applied faculty member in the UT School of Music may enter the competition.
- Each entrant may enter only ONCE in the competition.
- The application MUST be signed by your applied instructor. Do not “vouch” for your instructor if he/she is out of town; the form must be physically signed by them.
- Winners from the previous year’s competition are not eligible to enter this year. (Winners who performed in March 2007 are eligible again to enter; last year’s winners who performed in March 2008 must wait another year until 2010)
Music
- A single movement from a concerto for instrumental soloist(s) and orchestra. Even if the work has continuous multiple movements, only one movement should be played.
- A single aria, song or work with vocal soloist(s) and orchestra.
- A single, self-contained work such as “Introduction and Allegro” or “Recitative and Aria” for instrumentalist or vocal soloist(s) and orchestra.
- A composition with several short movements, totaling no more than 10 minutes in total duration for instrumental or vocal soloist(s) and orchestra.
- Orchestral parts must be readily available for purchase or rental.

Competition
- Concerto Competition Preliminaries will be held on January 28 in various locations and times. These will be coordinated and announced by area: string, vocal, instrumental and keyboard.
- Concerto Competition Finals will be held on January 31 on the James R. Cox Stage, beginning at 3:00pm. Please check in at the lobby 15 minutes prior to your scheduled audition time.
- Please provide TWO photocopies of the musical score with measure numbers marked every 10 measures, for both the Preliminaries and Finals.
- The jury consists of qualified professionals representing string, instrumental, keyboard, and vocal areas. It will make its selection based upon its opinion of the best performances, regardless of performing medium/area. The jury has the right to hear the entrants’ selection in its entirety, or to stop the performer at any time. The decision of the jury is final. Results posted by 12:00noon on Monday, February 1, 2010.
- Winners must be available for rehearsals with the University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra a minimum of 2 rehearsal weeks prior to the concert date.
