The University of Tennessee Vocal Solo and Ensemble Festival is an adjudicated music festival intended for vocal and choral students in Tennessee high schools. The Festival is an opportunity for high school students to perform quality music before professional music educators and to receive comments and an evaluation. Four categories will be available for adjudication:
Vocal Solo
This category is for individual singers who will
perform two contrasting selections. Literature performed should be
drawn from traditional classical vocal solo repertoire.
Small Ensembles
Groups in this category will have between 2 - 24 singers and perform
two selections. Literature performed should be drawn from traditional
classical choral material, including madrigals and other appropriate
material written for smaller ensembles.
Student Conductors
Adjudication for students in this category will be completed with
a small ensemble from their school as described above. The student
should, with guidance from their teacher, select and prepare one
selection of music to be conducted and adjudicated. It is expected
that the student conductor alone rehearse the selected piece with
their ensemble from the initial note-teaching stage up to performance
level during the preparation period before the Festival.
Special Category
Ensembles in this category will also have between 2 - 24 singers
and perform music not to exceed ten minutes in length. Literature
for this area should be drawn from jazz, Broadway, barbershop or
quality popular music. Choreography may or may not be used by groups
in this category.
Adjudication
Each student or ensemble receives a written critique of their
performance as well as an oral critique and suggestions for improvement
from the adjudicator. Each vocal soloist, student conductor or
ensemble will receive a rating of Superior, Excellent, or Good.
The Student Conductor category involves a somewhat self-directed
or "independent
study" unit. Students select their music and are responsible
for the majority of the preparation on their own.
Awards
Plaques will be awarded to all superior rated singers in the Vocal
Solo category and to ensembles in both the Small Ensemble and Special
Category areas. Medals will be awarded to all superior rated student
conductors.
Fees
Vocal Solo $15.00
Small Ensembles $20.00 (2 - 24 singers)
Special Category $30.00 (2 - 24 singers)
